Healthcare workers must be able to set aside their own cultural beliefs, values, and customs while working to provide quality care that is culturally appropriate and acceptable to diverse patient population. A culturally competent nurse will have the knowledge to adapt and change individual care plans that will align favorably with the beliefs, attitudes, behaviors, and heritages of various cultures (Giger, 2013, p. 6). Taking a Cultural Diversity Self Assessment (IllinoisCTE., n.d.), I will reflect on what was learned about myself, the score of 110 achieved, and explain further how the resulting strengths and weaknesses impact my nursing care. Strategies to strengthen the weaknesses that were found will help attain cultural competency in the nursing profession.

Research is readily available by accessing the Internet and doing so will help increase the understanding and thoughts concerning these subjects. The best way to combat the effects of stereotyping is not to assume traits and behaviors of a person until you have committed the time to communicate and interact with this individual. The overall stereotype of a group is broken down when we do not allow our preconceived feelings and views of a group interfere with the attributes conveyed by individuals of this group. Once healthcare workers are comfortable with their own culture, values, and beliefs they can increase their cultural competence, reduce the stigmas associated with stereotyping, and provide culturally sensitive care (Kratzke & Bertolo, 2013, p. 107). Communication, listening, and interacting with individuals of a different cultural background does help to reduce and eliminate the effects
