Exercise 2 Charlotte, NC showed very interesting geographical variation. From 20km altitude, it looks like Central Business District and the suburb area are distinctively divided. There is a narrow and small central business district in the middle of the city and outside of the Central Business District, there is a thick layer of suburb area where people reside. One interesting fact that I found is that the suburb area is really densely packed and physical area of the suburb was really big. The cause of this variation is the urbanization. First, when this city began to develop, business owners and residents settled in the center of Charlotte, also known as Central Business District now. However, as the city develops bigger and more crowded, …show more content…
There are several reasons why I believe this is the CBD. First thing I noticed was that the color of the areas. As much as it sounds irrational, it shows a distinctive difference. The Central Business District is filled with colors like grey, black and suburb is filled with green and little bit of colors from the roof. This makes sense because in CBD, it requires a lot wider roads for busy business hours and parking lots for customers and workers. Simply, the reason for this change can be explained by urbanization trend of America. From 1993, as the city, especially Central Business District, grew bigger and busier, people had to move out of the CBD to find a better environment to live. That is why this new part of the city, also known as suburb, was formed: to live in a better condition with more space and less crowded neighborhood. Suburb is a result of the development of CBD, but also can be a cause of other parts of the city. For example, edge cities can form to fulfill the need and demand of the suburb. Also, slums are created due to the population movement from CBD to suburb. Because richer and more educated people who can afford the house in suburb moved out, CBD is left with residents that are less educated and poor. That is why slum was formed that is low-income residential area. From this area to CBD, relative distance will change during the week, because different factors are impacting the relative distance. During weekdays, morning around 9 and 5 in the afternoon will be busy because that is usually when normal workers are going to work and getting off work. On weekends, we can assume that it won’t be too busy since there are usually no set schedules for workers and
