Some people believe cyberbullying isn’t a real thing, while others believe it has a huge impact on the lives of teens everywhere. But, as studies prove cyberbullying does affect people, and it happens more often than regular bullying. Many people who don’t think this is an issue probably haven’t been through it themselves, considering they’re parents of teenagers who most likely didn’t have internet access like we do now. Most teens don’t realize when they’re making fun of someone, or harassing them online that what they’re doing is illegal. Consequently, they never notice that what they’re doing or saying online is hurting another person’s feelings, putting a type of permanent sadness on a person(s), and even worse, killing them, until they end up with a criminal record. …show more content…
Criminal consequences range from state to state, but some include intentional infliction of emotional distress, negligence, and premises liability, meaning you are charged because the person you you cyberbullied hurt him/herself. In this article, “The Tragic Story of Tyler Clementi”, Dahrun Ravi made fun of his roommate, Tyler Clementi, in college for being gay. Clementi ended up jumping off of a bridge into the Hudson River and dying. Ravi was convicted on 15 criminal charges, but was put on early release after 30 days. After he spent his 30 days in jail he was given three years probation, required to complete 300 hours of community service, and had to attend cyber-bullying and lifestyle alternative counseling. He has to pay a $10,000 fine to the probation
