Child protection within a wider field of safeguarding children and young people encompasses a variety of different factors including family circumstances, poverty, and cultural practices. Looking at family circumstances, a parent or main care givers health both mentally and physically can impact the safety of a young person or child. Struggling parents with mental or physical illnesses may struggle to meet the needs of the child or young person. Also parents with substance misuse, domestic violence and so on may neglect their children, and their needs and fail to provide a safe home environment. Some children make be in foster homes or looked after by local authorities, there is many risk factors associated with children in care this can make children and young people more vulnerable. This included things like the separation from family, from a home environment, receiving a lack of constant care also in very few occasions there is a risk of institutional abuse. Adverse family circumstances may lead to children and young people running away from home or going missing. This poses a greater risk to their safety and security.
Some young people and children may live in environments that expose them to risks and unsafe practices. An example of this could be a child that lives in a high traffic areas, or areas that are high in violence and misuse is prevalent. This can then lead to young people and children becoming more vulnerable to accidents involving traffic, or crime involvement and other dangerous behaviour.
In the UK some areas are of major concern due to child trafficking. The risk is that young people and children are recruited and misused, and then exploited, forced into working or being sold. Trafficking can have a huge impact on mental and physical health and can devistate the lives of children and young people. Children and young people who are refugees or asylum seekers
