For our date-night on September 30, 2016, my husband, Caleb, and I went to see Cyrano by the Young Company in the Margettes Theater at Brigham Young University. Directed by Kris Jennings, Cyrano took a unique twist on the original play Cyrano de Bergerac. Additionally, I met with the production design team on September 26, 2016, with the rest of my class. Including Jennings (who was absent), we also heard from Robert Fuller (Dramaturg), Lizzie Mickelson and Cortnie Beatty (Co-Costume Designers) and Rachel Bowerbank (Scenic Designer). In this altered sequence of Cyrano, the director expressed a keen interest in emphasizing courage. In order to do this, Jennings changed the script to better relate to children. Along with a simplified script, she also included costumes with a modern day twist. In this way, Jennings weaved the idea of courage into the script and costumes, as well as other aspects of the play itself. One of the aspects of courage that I really saw from Jennings’ concept was when Cyrano resisted openly loving Roxanne after her husband’s death, for courage is “strength in the face of pain or grief” (“Courage”). While that seems like a contradiction, most of the costumes hit the nail on the head. Cyrano, for example, had a unique but well-looking outfit with purple corduroy pants, a plaid vest and bold hat with a quill. Le Brat, Cyrano’s best friend, also wore an olive green dress with a red scarf—this served well to give her some color while accentuating her tom-boy-like characteristics.
