The Emancipation Proclamation was a presidential proclamation ordered by Abraham Lincoln. September 22, 1862, after the battle at Antietam, he announced to set the freedom of more than 3 million slaves. The Emancipation Proclamation promised freedom of action slaves in the south, once the union take back control. It applied only to states that had seceded from the union. On January 1, 1863, Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation meaning that he freed the slaves. Due to this, all slaves in rebellious areas are free. It captured the hearts and imagination of millions of African American slaves.
