Tragedy at Jamestown
In 1607 around 110 englishmen/colonists sailed to the mouth of chesapeake bay in virginia, to be the first permanent english settlement. The first years of the settlement was not easy, half of the colonists were announced dead. Why did so many colonists die between 1607-1611? They died because of the Powhatan Indians, the colonists themselves, and the environment.
The colonists died because of the Powhatan Indians, In document E, it states that “2 die in the first Powhatan Indian attack” the evidence proves my claim because in document E, it talks about how the attacks the Powhatan Indians have made on the colonists. Again in document E, it states that “of 120 men stationed near the falls, the Powhatan Indians kill neere halfe.” The evidence proves my claim because if the Powhatan Indians killed neere halfe then that means the Indians were responsible. This shows that the Indians were some of the reason why the colonists died.

The evidence proves my claim because in document c it says that they brought 47 gentlemen and that is 47 men who didn't do anything and could have helped the colonists survive. The colonists only brought 1 surgeon and if they brought 47 surgeons instead of 47 gentlemen the colonists could have had a way bigger chance of surviving. The colonists only brought 1 surgeon and that 1 surgeon might have died, now they have no surgeons to help with sickness and wounds. This shows that the colonists were responsible for their own
