Critical Analysis of Film: Dallas Buyers Club
Description
Dallas Buyers Club looks at the life of Ron Woodroof, a homophobic, racist hard fought man who works as an electrician, and occasional rodeo cowboy, living in Dallas Texas in 1985. After an on the job accident, Ron is taken to an area hospital, where they run diagnostics and monitor his condition. Dr. Saks and her supervisor inform Ron that he has tested positive for HIV, and due to his condition, he has less than a month to live. Initially, Ron enters a state of extreme denial, and is insentient upon the fact that there is no way that he has a disease that only “faggots’ get. Although other main characters, like Rayon and Dr. Saks are prominent, they relatively remain the same person, the real development comes from Mr. Woodroof. In the early stages of the film we are introduced to Ron. He is a middle aged drunk, who spends most of his days incapacitated, high on cocaine, or in a sleazy motel or trailer, spending his last dollar on a quick hookup with a cheap prostitute. Ron is a man’s man, a strong heterosexual with extreme hate for different races, as well as a particular hate towards the gay community. Prior to his diagnosis, Ron would make jokes and rude remakes that supported his hate towards gays. When he was diagnosed, Ron was initially very agitated due to the fact that only gays could get HIV, and that he was a “faggot mother fucker.” As the film proceeds Ron begins to develop relationships with members of the gay community. Particular Rayon, a transvestite, who understands Ron and accepts him regardless of his views towards the gay community. When Ron creates the Dallas Buyers club his network within the gay community grows, and soon Ron begins to sympathize with these people who he once detested. In the beginning of the movie, Ron could hardly stand being in the same room as gay people, buy by the end of the film, Ron is hugging, laughing, and …show more content…
The plot of the film is fantastic, and the fact that it was based off of a true story make is that much more impressive. In my opinion the thing that make this film exceptional is the character development that is created in just a short two-hour movie. Ron is able to go from an extremely racist, homophobic, and hateful man to someone who relates to, connects to, and is emotionally invested in the people who he once hated. I believe that this development is due heavily in part by the fact that Rayon approaches Ron’s distaste towards the gay community with comedy, and sarcasm. The way in which she goes about this makes her personality click with Ron’s and although he initially dost like that or like Rayon, Ron soon finds a companion in her. The unlikely relationship that was created between these two is what helps Ron to develop not just emotionally, put spiritually as
