There always seems to be an infinite number of stories about soul mates and the funny words and first conversations, but none of that applied to Dan Avidan. He was currently 33 and was wholly certain that those twisting, colorful words would never show up on any part of his body.
Every new person meant another chance to see the elegantly curved lines carved into his flesh, but after every day with someone he held a half-way decent conversation, he scoured his body to find nothing but the pale pink flesh his body had looked like since he was 16. At this point of recollection, Dan always botched who had actually introduced each other, but the very first words out Dan’s mouth were, “Nice to meet you. Name’s Danny.” Those exact words were started to scribe themselves on Brian’s upper arm, sinking to his elbow. Before Dan or Brian could react to the words spiraling down his arm, Brian introduced himself quickly, formalities and all, “Dr. Brian Wecht, Ph.D.” The moment seemed to slow as Dan realized exactly what was forming on Brian’s arm and the light tingle of electricity on his shin.
Before another thought, Dan tugged at his left pant cuff, hiking it up to his knee. The words weren’t colorful, like he had been told soul mates have. They were dark, almost black, but still that cheerful loopy design that assured Dan a soul mate was near and fully alive.
