Dana Gioia writes to persuade his audience that the decline in reading in America will have a negative effect on society. To further persuade his audience, Gioia uses strategies such as appeals to logic and shifts in the layout of the passage. Gioia includes facts in his writing to show evidence of knowledge. Gioia uses facts because it better supports his claim and the reader will be able to rely on him for true information. According to Gioia, “Among hourly workers, poor reading skills ranked second, and 38 percent of employers complained that local schools inadequately taught reading comprehension.” This sentence includes facts about the argument and shows the reader that Gioia knows what he is talking about and is smart.
