For most families, traditions gather everyone together to enjoy each other and celebrate the good times. Traditions can include going to someones favorite restaurant for their birthday or even joining with all of the families for Thanksgiving. However, Traditions can have good Traditions dating back to the 1900s can incorporate racial and sexist traditions. In “The Lottery” by Shirley Jackson, the dangers of traditions continue to show as the town joins in to do a terrible crime. People follow traditions passed down without realizing the danger that tradition can cause.
The main theme of “The Lottery”, is that people blindly follow traditions despite the dangers. In the first place, the tradition keeps the town alive. The tradition has been followed for seventy-seven years even though some towns have quit, their town feels like trouble will follow if they quit the tradition. Old Man Warner feels like people would want to go back to caves if they stopped doing the tradition because they’ve done it for so long. It tradition just like seeing the crops grow in the fall.
