The Boys in the Boat

The Boys in the Boat is an inspiring true story about how with hard work and perseverance an individual or individuals can achieve theirs dream. This is story about Joe Rantz and the eight other boys in the 1936 Olympic Gold medal winning crew, pushing themselves and each other to prove to the world what they can do. The author, Daniel Brown focused the story around Joe and his life. Throughout the book the author discusses Joe, his struggles during his time at Washington and his time as a boy growing up during the depression. Along with the history of the United States during the early 1930s, the author also includes the history of Germany during that same time. He discusses what was going on in Germany with the build up of the Olympics and how the world was blind to what Hitler was doing behind the scenes. There are many examples of perseverance and hard work throughout this book, the three that stuck out the most were Joe and his survival on his own growing up, Joe’s hard work to stay a student at Washington, and the drive of the whole team to win Olympic Gold in Berlin. It gave me chills reading how the team fought back with everything they had in them to win. This story showed me how to not give up, keep persevering, because you are never too far behind to finish what you started. To give up is easy, but if you give up then you’ll never know what could have been and you’ll never get the chance to go back to that very same moment. Just like that American crew knew this was their only shot to make history as one of the best crews to have ever rowed. The author did an amazing job of telling the story of Joe and these men. Not only did he talk about their story, but also he talked about what was happening in the world so that the reader could see the whole picture. This story can now be read about for many yeas to come by all
