Dark Ghettos Analysis

In Shelby's Dark Ghettos he speaks about the main differences between the different cultures and communities in America. Specifically about black people in ghettos. His ideas are awe inspiring and have gotten me to change my mind about many aspects of how I first viewed ghettos. While his ideas are concrete and he does go in great depth about the ideas of integration around societies and communities. In his ideas of integration he sees it as mainly black and white. While this may have been a respectable view in the past our world is ever changing, it is no longer just a few races it is now multiple races from all over the world moving into America. And as such, communities need to reflect our values and culture.

He suggests transporting poor blacks to rich white school communities, but this causes alienation of that student. Not able to pay for certain goods but also unable to hold up in conversations with his/her peers. Being left out when speaking about vacations or about trips that other students may be able to travel on. However, this isn't the biggest reason for me specifically, because I looked at my own past experience with my time at Mountain View. I saw that kids were more likely to be ok with other students if it was a bigger melting pot. Not only blacks and whites but also Asians, Indians, Latinos, and so on. When faced by multiple cultures at once, as a white person, I see it as I become the outsider. Giving me a new perspective, a perspective that my fellow Americans who are not white have been dealing with for ages. This came into light mainly now that I am in college, I see many individuals that are of many cultures, whites are not the main race any more like in my home town. I am learning to adapt and grow with these
