The unfortunate economic situation that Dave Diamond finds himself in forces him to only value activities based off of their economic productivity, as seen in his lack of understanding for Steve’s baseball hobby. In the eyes of Dave, Steve should understand the importance of money, “but the boy was crazy about baseball, and after school, when he could have been working as a delivery boy or selling papers, he played ball with the kids. His failure to appreciate that the family needed a few extra dollars disgusted Dave”(Callaghan 1). Considering the fact that Dave Diamond is “a poor man”(1) he values money dearly, which is rightly so as his family is in desperate need for it. That being said, Dave fails to see the gratification that the hobby provides Steve and is simply frustrated that his son is wasting his time participating in an activity that does not provide his family with money. During the game “Dave had to listen to Steve’s recitation of the batting average of every Philly that stepped up to the plate; the time the boy must have wasted learning these averages began to appall him. He showed it so plainly that Steve felt guilty again and was silent”(2). Dave once again shows the inability to understand the importance that baseball has to Steve. In the eyes of Dave, Steve has wasted the time he spent learning the batting averages, and Dave is so shocked to the extent that his facial expression guilts his boy into going silent. The cause of this is simply because Dave, someone who is struggling financially, can not comprehend why someone would spend so much time on an activity that doesn't prove any money
