David Brooks Non-Existent Diversity Summary

Everyone feels comfortable surrounded by people who share the same thoughts and who are basically like them. David Brooks talks about how people gravitate to others of the same race and income levels in the same communities as them. Which I agree with because there are neighborhoods that the majority of the people are the same race and the reason I think this is, is because we feel comfortable being with our race and feel like we can relate on something. We are comfortable in our current social circles and are scared to branch out and be surrounded by people that have different views on things. Segmentation created by us will never leave and will always exist everywhere for one reason or the other. David brooks is trying to say that even though we think this country is well diverse we still try to be where we think is normal. People don't like getting out of there comfort zone and this is an example of it. The text is concentrated on bringing awareness of the non-existent diversity in the United States. I have grown up in a latino community my whole life, the high school I went to had 94% latinos in it even though David Brooks says that we go with our race and are not really diverse in that aspect we are diverse in other aspects like have friends that are different races or have different views. Many people may not care where they live but some people might be looking for something that is as close to home as they can get to be surrounded with people who may have the same views as their family and feel like they have something in common. This should be seen as okay because it is not everybody wants to break out of their shell and live somewhere totally unknown. I can see how he might think this because most of it I can see with my own eyes. There is a bit of diversity but not too much and I feel like that is totally
