Who’s afraid of the big bad torpedos not David G. Farragut. David Farragut was a navy admiral during the civil war. He famous for his bravery and victory at Mobile Bay and his famous quote “ Damn the torpedos! Full speed ahead.” Young David Farragut commanded a prize ship in the 1812 war. Helping General Ulysses S. Grant with the siege of Vicksburg.
David Glasgow Farragut was born on July 5th, 1801 in Campbell’s station, Tennessee. His birth given was name James Glasgow Farragut. James father Jorge Farragut was a spanish merchant who fought in the revolutionary war and the war of 1812. Young James was a sailor in the war of 1812. His a awarded ship was captured by the british. Later Jorge moved to New Orleans with his family. When Jorge was there he aided the father of David Porter future commodore . After his death David Porter asked if he could adopt Young James to train him in becoming a naval officer. In respect of this James changed his name to David.
Although David was born and raised in the south, he decided to join the union when the civil war broke out. On April 24, 1862 he was assigned to take over one of the largest cities in the south New Orleans. After this victory he was raised to rear admiral.

There was union battleships trying to enter the bay. When one of the battleships the USS TECUMSEH was struck a water mine or a torpedo. the whole ship sank and the union was on on the brink of retreating. Farragut was watching the battle on his ship USS HARTFORD. David asks “what’s going on?” and the USS BROOKLYN replied “ there’s torpedos in the water.” David said to the USS BROOKLYN “ Damn those torpedos, full speed ahead.” With this action of bravery he lead the felt and took over Mobile Bay.
