Throughout this semester we have read numerous amounts of essays, which were all very memorable. One essay that stood out to be the most was Plague of Tics written by David Sedaris. David was always constantly getting judged for his antics and uses humor to try and make the best out of his situation. Plague of tics was the most memorable essay that i read. For example, I found it very intriguing how David Sedaris used sarcasm to describe his life living with Obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD). When Miss. This essay shows not to be judgmental of someone because you never know what they are going through in their lives. Throughout the essay David is constantly being judged for his strange behavior like rocking, kissing the stairs, licking the switches and many more of his tics. One part of the essay that really caught my attention was when Miss. Chestnut said, “I’d like to have a word with your mother. You do have one, don’t you? I’m assuming you weren’t raised by wild animals...” In my opinion, this was a very rude comment. Miss. Chestnut also refers to him as having “special problems”. David could not help his behavior because he was mentally sick. I found it sickening that she judged him just based on how he acts. Another example of this is when he's in college living with his roommate he has a lot of pressure to try and an act like a normal college student; he then gets introduced to cigarettes. The use of cigarettes has helped David control his tics. “Everything’s fine as long as I know there’s a cigarette in my immediate future.” This reminded me of my family friend that has Asperger’s, he was always extremely anxious all the time and always going off on tangents. He then started to smoke marijuana and it actually helped
