World War II took place in Europe from 1939-1945. Gradually the laws for jews in Europe started to become stricter, eventually there were concentration camps for Hitler’s perceived enemies. Auschwitz was the worst concentration camp in WWII for prisoners. Auschwitz tortured all of its prisoners. The firing wall located at the side of the block was the location for carrying out sentences for prisoners by lining them up against the wall and shooting them. Auschwitz II had gas chambers and crematoriums for killing and getting rid or prisoners. Prisoners would also have to stand at roll call every day for about 4 hours, sometimes in harsh weather without protection. Workers were also forced to work 11-12 hours a day with a diet of only one quart of soup, sometimes with skim cheese. Nazis also made prisoners do marches, one example is when the soviet army started approaching which caused Nazis the lead 60,000 prisoners on marches in different directions, and to different locations. The main goal was to exterminate all of Hitler's perceived ‘enemies.’ This meant the deaths of all prisoners deported to Auschwitz. Auschwitz initially served as a detention center for political prisoners, which then evolved to a network of camps for perceived ‘enemies.’ The main goal was the ‘Final Solution’ which was the elimination of all Jews, Gypsies, artists, communists, educators, homosexuals, mentally/physically handicapped and all others ‘unfit’ for survival.
