The first lesson learned was, lack of training causes many mistakes. It appeared Brigadier General McDowell understood training was essential to be victorious. He requested more time to train his unexperienced troops before attempting the mission. However, his request was denied and many mistakes were made right from the beginning. First and foremost, the Union troops were not trained for the weather or terrain they encountered. They did not have the stamina to march the distance and fight in the battle. Furthermore, they were not trained on tactical maneuvers, therefore lacking land navigational skills and time management skills. The lack of leadership training, diminished trust, created chaos and caused the Union troops to be positioned incorrectly on the battlefield. The Confederate troops encountered some of the same shortcomings. Their force also lacked adequate tactical training. When exposed to artillery projectiles they became disorganized and confused. They were not sure what the proper course of action was, so they retreated. Troops were only required to enlist for ninety days during this campaign, therefore, drastically reducing training time. Both the Union and Confederate leaders formulated strategies based off the information they had on each other. The plan of attack was devised from the type of weaponry systems, number of personnel, and location of the army. The plan was executed with the same factors in mind. The Union leadership struggled with accessing the inaccurate information and implementing a different strategy. Whereas, the Confederate leadership was capable of applying different tactics to inaccurate information in a timely manner.
