September 11, 2001, a day that no American will ever forget. Four airplanes were hijacked. Three of which hit major points of interest in America. All four of which killed many people and left many people sadness. America quickly determined who was responsible, Islamic Extremists. American’s all knew who; they all knew how, but there was one question no one knew, “why?”. Why would anyone do something so terrible? America came together and thought of many possible reasons, some based on emotion, some on conspiracy, and some on logic and analysis. Three possible reasons for this attack is that these Islamic Extremists hate America for their culture, their support in Israel, or, the one that makes most sense, their involvement in Middle Eastern culture. “They” in this statement is referring to the Islamic extremists and America is referring to its culture. It is very easy to see the differences between American culture and middle eastern culture, but just because its different doesn’t mean they want to actively destroy it. However, there are still people who believe this and feel as though their culture and patriotism is being challenged. George W. Bush said in his speech shortly after the attacks that they hate America because of their “democratically elected government” and their “freedom of religion…speech…and their freedom to vote” (Document E). This sounds great when taken in context of the attacks that just happened, however, it is purely emotional. There are many other countries with these freedoms, but the difference between America and the countries with similar freedoms is the level of involvement. In America’s quest to spread ideals America had conflicted with many Islamic extremists. If America had not gotten involved with the Middle East, no one in the Middle East would care about America.
