In 1924, China was in chaos. Five year old emperor was overthrown and republic was set up. The new republican government collapsed soon and country broke into parts. Manchuria was disaffected, Manchu dynasty was originated there. After the fall of empire, the warlords were fighting over to gain the control over central government. Chinese Communists withdrew from Jinzhou, the day after that a new army came in the country. This army cleaned uniform and glazed American weapons. The army was called Kuomintang. People used to come on the streets and stand in line, cheering and clapping for them. These soldiers looked like they beat Japanese. Mao's stated policy was: "We kill small Chiang Kai-sheks. We don't kill big Chiang Kai-sheks" (Chang 127). No one talked about this policy, but it was talked in private.
