Imagine 300,000 people both colored and white walking down a crowded street all hot and sweaty, all with the same state of mind. The March on Washington was a big movement toward eliminating segregation. The march was a good idea instead of doing something violent and hurting both the people who were being violent and innocent people. Some people thought that the march was a waste of time but others thought it was the best non-violent way of protesting. During the march on August 28th, 1963 the 300,000 people walked to the Lincoln Memorial to give speeches. This is when the famous I Had a Dream speech was said. The March on Washington gave colored people hope in what they were going through and it helped them to know that they weren’t alone.

Puls if colored people had a peaceful non-violent protest cops would want them to stop and would start arresting blacks. Sometimes the cops would even go as far as shooting kids and adults with fire hoses. Whites would sometimes hurt or even kill colored people because of their race. Whites would treat colored people like they were trash. Even if a colored person looked at a white person the white person would get mad because they thought that blacks were not made equal to themselves. When colored people wanted to pray in a nice church whites made them pray in the basement. Colored people would say that they wanted to sit upstairs so that the could see the beautiful church. Then then the white person guarding the door would tell the colored person that whites and blacks were not made equal so you have to sit and pray in the basement.
