Transcendentalism is a literary and philosophical movement that came about during the 19th century in New England. It encourages spiritual reality and knowledge through intuition. This is something that had not really been done before, since it was seen to some as a type of “rebellion” on society. Supports of the movement saw it differently though. They felt as though we should rely more on our hearts than our senses. For example, in the film “Dead Poets Society,” many of the characters are perfect examples of what it is like to follow your head. Like everything in life, transcendentalism has its positives and negatives. For starters, Neil was the character in the film who had the most free-thought and individualism. He loves acting and being part of the theater program, but his father does not approve. But he follows his heart anyway. Without the inspiration of his teacher, Mr. Keating, then he may have never trusted his heart that was set on acting. Neil may have played it safe. If he had, then he may not have taken his life. However, that is one of the effects of transcendentalism, and a huge reason why many were not supporters of it. Going against society, and possibly the people you love, to follow your heart can lead to serious consequences. But that is what it is all about. Keating is the main inspiration for the boys, and they look up to him greatly. It is a positive thing for them to have a leader, but it came with great consequences. After Neil took his life, and investigations had taken place, Mr. Keating faced a lot of blame from the school system. This is an example of why rebelling the standards of society can be risky, and have serious consequences. Of course it was never Mr. Keating's intentions to promote dying for what you believe in. But the concepts and individualism that comes along with transcendentalism can definitely have that effect on a person who follows it so
