What words come to your mind when you think about the American South? Cowboys, both villain and heroes, the unthinkable crime, and after all the death and gunshots, a magical and happy ending. This storyline is magnificently played out in the production of Deadwood Dick, performed by the students of James Madison High School. Set in the rural town of Calamity Jane’s Mantrap Saloon, the play centers around the conviction of the central villain, Black’n Red, and the two heroes’ attempts to capture him.Being a melodrama, there must be ladies in distress and Deadwood Dick has two, sisters, Rose and Lily Blossom. From the stereotypical asian bartender to the hardheaded but softhearted proprietor, Calamity Jan, and many other distinct characters, this melodramatic tale of the Old West promises nothing but two hours of booing , hissing , cheering and nonetheless, laughter. …show more content…
Although the accents were not perfect, they were distant and consist throughout the show, which added to the performance’s flow and portrayal of the storyline. However, as this was an “audience interactive” show, the actors could have waited until the commotion came to a simmer, as the beginnings of some lines were lost. Through their unique spin on classic southern props, such as the beer bottles and the guns, the audience was able to understand a characters specific personality, along with the balanced use of the props, added to the natural, yet over-dramatic, southern group
