The article, “Death by Sugar”, by Kate Lunau is an article about the negative effects that sugar has on consumers. The article describes how we, in North America, are at an all-time high with heart disease, diabetes and obesity. People are starting to believe that this is caused by sugar, and are realizing that low-fat and low-salt foods are not as healthy as they seem. The article also sheds light on how the food industry has reacted to these claims, and how it has defended itself.

In all honesty, I was not surprised that sugar was causing heart disease, diabetes and obesity, nor that “healthy” foods (for example, flavored yogurts) are filled with added sugars that aren’t needed. The author of the article talks about how the food industry is deceiving consumers. Firstly, the food industry is being deceiving with the nutrition labels that they put on products. For example, the corporations do not show how much sugar they added to their product; they only show the total amount of sugar in the product. I believe that consumers should know how much sugar is added sugar and how much sugar is naturally occurring in the food. Consumers should also know what the maximum amount of sugar they should consume in a day is. In the article, the president of the Canadian Sugar Institute stated, “Science hasn’t found a specific level of sugar that causes harm.” Though I found this statement has a hint of truth behind it, I find that this information is biased, since she represents the manufacturers of Canada’s sugar. I also think that we may actually have found the level of sugar that causes harm, but the results are buried in industry funded
