Death
We, as human beings, often fear death but it is inevitable whether we fight it or embrace it. In the poems ‘Death Came to See Me in Hot Pink Pants’ by Heather Royes and ‘Because I could not stop for death’ by Emily Dickenson, death is personified, albeit not correspondingly, to illustrate a persona’s feelings on death.
Death can come across as a welcoming embrace or a deceiving stranger waiting to strike. The persona within ‘Because I could not stop for death’ introduces death as a chivalrous chauffeur who his takes his time. The persona viewed death as something peaceful and was ready to die. It can be argued that the persona lived a life so busy that they didn’t have time to die as shown by the first line. The next line continues on

This poem presents death as attractive and in the first stanza the persona readily gives in to him. A saga boy is a playboy which hints at the deception of death and the expertise death has. It can be argued that the first stanza can be treated as an introduction to death. In the first stanza death flirts with the persona as a way to ease the persona into the idea of him. Death is presented in hot pink pants and a matching sequence waistcoat to distract from who he actually is. The entirety of the first stanza can be said to represent an illusion which at first deceives the persona into thinking she is ready for death. It can be suggested the second stanza is the persona’s realisation. The persona sees past the illusion and recognises she is not yet ready to die. She sees death for the trickster he is however she still finds him beautiful. It is possible that the persona still sees the appeal in dying.in the second stanza we see the true persistence and arrogance of death in lines 18 and 19 as he laughs as he is inevitable. This poet also personifies death and uses metaphors to depict the proceedings within the poem. The personification of death this poet uses accurately portrays the deceptive nature of death as ‘saga’ boys appear to be gentlemen at first but turn out to be the complete opposite.
