A character’s actions does not only show a representation of that character, but can also represent their moral code. In Death of a Salesman by Arthur Miller, the author uses a wide variety of techniques to develop characterization. One of Miller’s main methods to develop a character was through his or her actions. Through these actions a character’s moral code can be analyzed. Through analyzing Biff, Bernard, and Willy’s actions, one can see how a character’s actions reflect on the reader’s perception of their moral code in Death of a Salesman.

Throughout the book he did not make a bad decision that would make the reader perceive him as morally wrong. Bernard was a character who did well in school and was not getting into much trouble. With his actions the reader could analyze based off of their own beliefs and experiences that Bernard kept high morals standards and had an acceptable moral code for the time. While Bernard did not have many actions that could help analyze or reflect his moral code based off of the success he had one can then analyze that his decisions he made were what was seen as having a good moral code. Society has set up different levels of morality which puts Bernard, Biff, and Willy all on different standards of what their moral code should be based on leadership, faith, and situation (Split Level Morality 2017). This is described as split-level morality, this is often seen as something that should not be happening and people often try to ge rid of the split-level.
