Before reading Steinbeck’s Of Mice and Men I agreed with the statement of states with death penalties have lower murder rates, and after reading the book I still agree with the statement. As cruel as it may be, Lennie would have died anyways. Murder is not a crime taken lightly since most people who commit this crime spend a majority of their lives in prison, which in a sense is similar to a death penalty because the criminal becomes dead to society. Even if the person is released, it will be hard for them to find a job because of their criminal record, this will lead to them to rely on others- if they have someone to rely on; and in many cases the individual feels useless which can lead to depression.
