Before entering the middle of the 19th century there were many people who could not pay their debts were sent to prison. But not just any prison, they were commonly sent to debtors prison. Author Samuel Johnson has written a book that explains all about debtors prison. The main rhetorical strategy Johnson uses in this excerpt is cause & effect.
In this excerpt Johnson is basically saying that because the people who can’t pay their debt are being sent to prison this is what is happening to their lives. Johnson also states that because people don’t pay their debt they get sent to prison.
Johnson is very argumentative while he explains why debtors prison is a bad idea. And why people are the way they are.
