Deception is apart of human nature. Everyone has done it, whether it was when you were very young or older. Deceitfulness is not a superior quality to have. In recent days lying has become such a problem that it is extremely difficult to tell when someone is telling the truth or not. Sometimes deceit might not even be lying, on the other hand it could be sarcasm. In the case of the short story The Open Window, by Saki, a young girl named Vera lies to Mr. Nuttel by telling a fabricated story on why her aunt leaves the window open. What Mr. Nuttel doesn’t does know that Mrs. Sappleton, Vera’s aunt, has a husband who is still alive. According to Vera, “Out through that window, three years ago to a day, her husband and her two young brothers went…show more content… Nuttel will either be scared of being lied to again or being hurt again because of a lie. For some it is easy to see that lies can be catastrophic to the ones being lied to. More and more people are becoming aware of this fact because more and more people are being lied to. If everyone would realize how much suffering is caused due to lying, and were able to see that there needs to be a change, the world would become a much radiant place. In the short story, The Open Window, Saki tells us, “Nuttel grabbed wildly at his stick and hat; the hall door, the gravel drive, and the front gate were dimly noted stages in his headlong retreat. A cyclist coming along the road had to run into the hedge to avoid imminent collision.” This show us that Vera’s lie deceived Mr. Nuttel to the point that he was so scared for his well being that he almost ran into a cyclist. If he would have hit the person riding their bike there would most definitely been a collision. If there would have been a collision two people would have gotten hurt because of the deception of Vera. This furthers the point of how devastating lying can be. When someone gets hurt because of a lie you told, you must own up to that. After the fact, there is nothing you can do to fix the mistake that you
