Have you thought of the enduring effects of your decisions on other people? In the novel Montana 1948 by Larry Watson, a book about the inner conflicts of a seemingly perfect family.The issues arise when the family "housekeeper" provides information in regard to a family members contovertcial actions. Throughout the novel characters decisions prove to not only harm themselves but also others around them.

David, the youngest in the Hayden family is faced with decisions no twelve year old boy should ever be faced with. The beginning of his summer appears to go by without a hitch. Later in the summer of 1948 his summer takes a turn for the worst. News about David's uncle is brought to light by Marie Little Soldier. Marie told the family that Frank, David's uncle, has been sexually assaulting Indian women on the reservation. Later in the novel, David sees Frank leave his house on the afternoon Marie died. David acquires this information but, he feels like he couldn’t tell his parents about what he knows. David did not want it to become evident to his parents that he knows everything that is panning out within the family. Frank's desire to kill Marie was derived from Marie proving information regarding Frank's actions on the Indian reservation. The information Marie provided was in regard to Frank sexually assaulting women on the reservation. This information about Frank was brought to light when Marie told Gail, "He takes liberties. Indecent liberties" (45). Frank's decision to sexually assault women on the reservation has effected not only the women he assaulted but, also the other women that are from the reservation.
