Decisions That Shape Us Everyday we make decisions that shape who we are. They can change our personalities in either a negative or positive way. In The Book Thief by Markus Zusak, Hans Hubermann decides to help a Jewish man in Nazi Germany. This makes the man live in fear. In Passing by Nella Larsen, Clare passes as a Caucasian and was a risk taker. She has to hide her true identity so her husband would not find out. In Romeo and Juliet by Shakespeare, Romeo made the decision to marry Juliet knowing that their families will be furious. Hans, Clare, and Romeo all show how decisions can shape who we are and become.
In The Book Thief, Hans Hubermann helps a Jewish man that is struggling in the streets. Hans has always been kind to Jewish people, but it is a risk to be sympathetic to them in Nazi Germany. Both Romeo and Juliet knew they can not get married but they did anyways. Romeo’s choice of marrying Juliet makes him a rebel. Later on, he killed Juliet's cousin, Tybalt, and got banned from Verona. “‘There is no world without Verona walls but purgatory, torture, hell itself. Hence banished is banished from the world, and world’s exile is death. Then banished is death mistermed. Calling death banished. Thou cutt’st my head off with a golden ax and smilest upon the stroke that murders me’” (Shakespeare 141). This demonstrates Romeo’s love for Juliet is too strong that he thinks death is better than banishment. This shows, If Romeo did not marry Juliet then his banishment from Verona would not be so dramatic and rebellious. Romeo’s decision to marry Juliet makes him a rebel which lead him to his banishment from Verona because he killed Juliet's
