The Declaration of Independence was a document written by five men appointed to the job by America's Congress in 1776, who had finally settled upon breaking ties with Britain. These men were Benjamin Franklin, Robert Livingston, John Adams, Roger Sherman, and Thomas Jefferson. Of the five men, Jefferson was considered to be the most skilled writer by the others, therefore the other four men mostly conveyed and disputed their ideas, and Jefferson took note of them. Congress used the Declaration to convey to Britain the current mindset of Americans, as Thomas Jefferson said after writing it, that it "was intended to be an expression of the American Mind."
