The United States has been seen as the land of the free ever since its creation. People from all over the world believe that all Americans live in prosperity and are getting an education to become successful. So many people come to America just to get an education because of the belief that our schooling system is one of the best in the world. The idea of America being the best and most advanced country in the world is far from true. Our education system is at the bottom of the list in literacy out of the top first world countries. Americans literacy is well below what it should be for our advanced society. Literacy has dropped to the bottom of people's minds and it's not something our country worries about. Literacy in adults is on the decline yet we do nothing to solve the issue.

As stated before, textbooks are not the best and cause a decline in literacy. Teachers go off the textbooks in their classes and use it as a lifeline for the students. The teacher needs to know more methods other than the one the book teaches because the book doesn't seem to be working either. Teachers are unprepared and are not equipped with the necessary teaching tools and methods that will be beneficial to the students. In the article “3 Key factors That Contribute to the Literacy Deficit” by Heidi Hyte she states that “Secondary teachers receive limited training in adolescent literacy instruction” (Hyte 1). Students are being deprived of learning and literacy because teachers lack the necessary training that is needed. “If we want our children to succeed, we must give their teachers the tools they need”(Hyte 2). By giving new tools and methods to our teachers could be training in teaching their students the basic and foundational literacy skills needed to
