Defiance Movie Review
Defiance by Edward Zwick is an incredible movie which is based off the amazing true story of the Bielski Partisans. The Bielski Partisans were a large group of Jewish refugees that hid in the Belarus forests from the Nazis. They had to provide themselves with shelter and food, while being constantly alert and on the lookout. Not many movies which provide an insight on how the Jews had to survive have been produced, and it was nice to see a different story from their point of view and learn the hardships that they had to face during the Holocaust.
The Bielski Partisans were led by the three brothers: Tuvia Bielski (Daniel Craig), Zus Bielski (Liev Schreiber), and Asael Bielski (Jamie Bell). They also had a younger brother, Aron Bielski (George MacKay), but he was not really important in the movie. The Bielskis were on the run from the Nazis in the Belarus forests. Throughout the movie, revenge is constantly occurring. For example, Tuvia kills the Germans that killed his mother and father. Also, Zus leaves to join the Russian Partisans so that he can unleash his revenge on the Nazis by ruthlessly killing every single one he sees. Survival is constantly being demonstrated as all of the Jewish refugees are trying to survive together and escape from the Nazis. The film was also historically accurate because the story of the 3 Bielski brothers is true. They did in fact help hundreds of Jews escape from the Nazis by surviving in their own communities in the forest. The movie portrays their story and lets everyone see how many hardships they all overcame together, especially since they never sought retribution for their actions. It correctly displayed how the Jews had to live during the Holocaust. The quote “Freedom begins with an act of Defiance” is beautifully and perfectly
