In Night, Elie Wiesel shares his memory of Juliek playing his violin to represented defiance and a hope for the future. Juliek and his violin represented defiance of the soul as he played a song he was not allowed to play. Before Juliek died “he played a fragment from Beethoven’s Concerto”(95) showing his defiance as “Jews were not allowed to play German music”(49). After being denied his life, humanity, and future by the Nazis, Juliek shows his boldness when he decides to play his violin and puts his soul into his music. He played Beethoven even when he knew that it was forbidden to play, his act of defiance as he would not let anyone take his music away. It was also Juliek’s way to tell the others to not give up hope, to keep living when
