What is Luck? Find a penny pick it up, and all day long you will have good luck, a phrase every person knows and repeats when he or she finds a penny on the street, revolves around the idea of good fortune, karma, or luck. There are superstitions that involve years of good and bad luck: breaking a mirror incurs seven years of bad fortune; black cat crossing the street can be even worse. Someone’s whole outlook on their day could be changed by one copper little penny found on the street. Luck, as defined by Merriam- Webster dictionary, is “a force that brings great fortune or adversity” (“Luck”). The word can be derived from an early Middle Dutch word luc, Middle English word lucke and Middle German word gelücke (“Origin”).Since its first known use was in the fifteenth century. The term luck is used on a daily basis. One can wish someone good luck on a test, or in a game. There is always the insult of beginner’s luck, if someone beats you the first time. After a fire burns down an apartment building, a mother feels “lucky” that both she and her child survived, while said child finds it “unlucky” that his Xbox was lost in the fire. A man finds it “unlucky” that the one lottery ticket he ever won was for a dollar, while a beggar on the street feels “lucky” when he gets a dollar to buy food. Variations in the definition of luck comes from the different stages and places in one’s life. A person who grew up with a CEO as a father will have a different definition from a cancer survivor. No one definition of the word luck can be wrong, because no one life experience is the same. No matter what happens people always have luck to believe
