To a wide variety of people, a hero can take on many forms. What may be a hero to one person, may not be to another. Heroism is generally characterized by selflessness, perseverance, courage, patience, and compassion. A hero is not only a fictional being who has supernatural abilities that go against all laws of physics. Rather, a hero may be a person working in the medical field, someone who has achieved great success from pure poverty, or simply a person who is trying their hardest to fight against an illness. As Arthur Ashe said, “True heroism is remarkably sober, very undramatic. It is not the urge to surpass all others at whatever cost, but the urge to serve others at whatever cost.” Throughout the world, there are thousands of healthcare workers. These positions range on a spectrum from surgeons to paramedics. Day in and day out, these people perform emergency operations and make the terminally ill comfortable in the last of their time. Many workers are away from their families for extended periods of time in order to insure that their patients fully recover. These people do everything in their power to serve the community. They ask nothing in return and often make the difference between life and death. …show more content…
