What’s in a name? A name reaches far past just being a word. Names are part of our identity, our social identity. We use names to identify others and as well as locations. All of our names are special, whether we realize it or not.
As a part of our social identity, names are part of our “masks”. What I mean by “mask” is the social “mask” or identity we display for everyone around us, including ourselves to an extent. Everyone we are around makes us feel a certain way and act differently. Most people act differently at school, I sure do. When we are alone, we take off these outer masks and show our true personality. I think I have one of the least common last names. According to my dad, my last name is German. From what I have researched though, my family’s history dates back as far as the 1800s in Scotland. I love all parts of my name, even if my last name is constantly joked about by classmates or mispronounced to an insane degree by my school’s staff. My favorite part of my name is my middle name because of its meaning and usage. My middle name, Blaise, I believe comes from the amazing mathematician, Blaise Pascal. The word Blaise is also associated with fire, which is red, my favorite color. My father and my grandfather all have the middle name Blaise.
