What Defines a Hero “A hero is someone given his or her life to something bigger than oneself” (Joseph Campbell). Many people are set with the idea that the only heroes are the ones that we see in comic books or action movies. When in reality, we are surrounded by heroes everyday. A real life hero is not someone who can fly or wears a cape, but someone who willingly gives their lives to help others and make this world a better place. It is a challenging duty, but the result, you have taken part in something much more immense than yourself. Therefore, to be a hero it takes dedication, endurance, and the will to make things better.

A true hero is someone who is fully committed to what it is they are doing. Without this passion you cannot help wholeheartedly. In other words, a hero must know the hardships ahead of them and accept and overcome them. One brilliant example of a heroic figure with this strength is Martin Luther King Junior. All of the great heroes around the world have to have this trait. Without endurance the hero has nothing to keep them going. To illustrate, Firefighters, soldiers, and rights activists all possess this trait. It is critical that they have determination. If an activist has strong beliefs but never pushes to take action they will never accomplish anything. In addition, if a firefighter isn't committed they will not be able to save anybody or be of any help. Heroes need to have perseverance so that they can make the world a better place for everyone. For instance, take Malala Yousafzai. She is a young heroine who is determined to insure that education for women everywhere is improved. She even took a bullet to the head to stand up for what she believes in, and she will continue to stop at nothing for women's rights. She said, “They thought that the bullets would silence us, but they
