They should also respect them in whatever they do. Respect is something earned and something that is given to other people regardless of race, color, religion or anything. Respect is defined as, “a feeling of deep admiration for someone or something elicited by their abilities, qualities, or achievements.” When comparing the two, I interpret the dictionary definition as, to get respect you have to do something outstanding or phenomenal. I try my hardest every day to give respect to people. When you are in school, teachers and staff members are at the top for respect. I am not saying that students should not be respected, but teacher and staff members are your elders. In the work place you should respect your boss and higher employees. For nursing which is my career choice, respect is a key role in your work life. Nurses need to respect the “older” nurses. When I say older nurse, I mean the nurses that have been working longer than you have. Nurses also need to respect the head nurse and director of nursing. Giving them respect will save you a lot of trouble in the end. Most importantly, the patients or residents need the most respect. To respect a patient means to not judge them. If a patient comes in and has AIDS or is a young girl pregnant you need to treat them with the same respect you would an elderly person who is sick. Respect is important to me now because I am learning more about respect that will help me in my years to come. In another aspect, I am learning to respect myself.
