In "The Gift of the Magi", the main characters, Della and Jim, wanted to give each other something valuable to possess, by sacrificing something that was precious to them. Della sacrificed her hair to buy a beautiful, crafted golden chain for Jim's watch, while Jim sold his golden watch to buy the beautiful jeweled combs for Della. They both didn't realize they gave up what each others' gifts were initially for. When Della was home waiting for Jim's arrival to hand him his Christmas gift, she was so excited to see the expression on Jim's face, not knowing that the watch was sold.
