Origins Demi Lovato is twenty-five years old but had been dealing with mental illness since she was just seven years old. Throughout the years she has dealt with Depression, Eating Disorders, Substance Abuse, and most prominently Bipolar Disorder. She discusses how when she was seven years old, she was suicidal, and that is where it all began. She was fascinated with death, and it was driven by her depression and feelings of sadness and loneliness. She has many unresolved issues with her birth father that had aided in these feelings. Her father was abusive and mean, which in turn he abandoned her at a young age, as he was dealing with mental illness himself. He abused substances. When she was 12 years old, she got bullied because of her weight. This was a turning point when she turned to alcohol and drugs to cope and soon had a substance abuse problem. Psychological factors related to a diminished sense of personal control and self-confidence, causing low-self-esteem, and having a distorted body image. Biological relate to having a possible genetic tendency to poor impulse control, emotional instability, and perfectionist traits. Socially, the world relevels are the idea and emphasis of on a slender idea, which leads to body dissatisfaction and pre-occupation with food and eating.
Substance Use Disorders generally start with a trigger. From there, there are many social influences, such as exposure to drugs, social expectations, cultural norms for use, and stress. Biological influences are, inherited genetic vulnerability, drugs activating the pleasure pathway in the brain, neuroplasticity increases drug-seeking and relapse. Psychological influences are using for pleasure, to avoid pain and being in control.
