In the Puritan community it was very hard and humiliating for Hester Prynne to be ostracized in their society, but how does this compare to being ostracized in society today? One person who has been ostracized is Demi Lovato. Demi Lovato is being ostracized by many people today on her weight which leads to her issues with bulimia, cutting, and even substance abuses. This compares and contrasts to Hester Prynne and her ostracization. Demi Lovato is being led down by many people especially teenagers on Twitter and various social media saying she is fat or is not skinny, comparing her to many other famous petite woman. Hester Prynne had committed adultery with a clergyman and because of this she was isolated from the rest of her society and punished by wearing the scarlet letter. Today in society we ostracize but in a more secret way. In Hester’s time era they would do it more publically like when they put her in the scaffold and decided to isolate her from everyone else, but in society today Demi and other famous or regular people, who are ostracized are rather hurt internally. She is rather hurt in the inside by being called fat by society leading to the psychological ramifications being the effect of this internal damage. Another example of how Demi’s situation is different from Hester’s is what Hester did is what they would consider in that time to be a horrible crime committed whereas Demi is just being who she is, for not being super model skinny.Today it would be considered nobody's business if someone committed adultery or not, although it would be considered morally wrong. In Hester’s time people would not be ostracized for not being skinny enough whereas Demi was. This shows how society has evolved and how Hester’s and Demi’s situations
