Throughout the years, many people have had numerous perspectives on democracy. A few individuals may feel it is reasonable and fair, while others feel it isn’t equivalent and unfair. In “12 Angry Men” by Reginald Rose, “Democracy” by Langston Hughes, and “Telling Americans To Vote, Or Else” by William Galston, all authors convey their perspective on democracy. Although these authors perspectives on democracy contrast from one another. They all similarly recognize that there are flaws within a democratic society, but used different techniques in order to present their views on democracy. Contrastingly from the other authors, Reginald Rose perspective on democracy is that he believes there is too much power in a democratic society and is not being taken seriously. As shown in “12 Angry Men” it states, “I mean let’s be reasonable. You sat in court and heard the same things we did. The man’s a dangerous killer. You could see it”. This demonstrates how there can be many close-minded people within a democratic society, presenting how there can the many irrationalities that can be played in a democracy, making it flawed. Furthermore, another indication was when “12 Angry Men” stated, “This better be fast, I got tickets to a ball game tonight… 7TH JUROR: Hey you a Yankee fan? 5TH JUROR: No, Milwaukee 7TH JUROR: Milwaukee! That’s like being hit on the head with a crowbar once a day” This implies that there are people in a democracy who don’t take their job seriously, even though they have the power,they use it in a way it shouldn’t be used. Along with the first two examples, the excerpt has stated, “Well, who wasn’t. I really think this is one of those open and shut things. They proved it a dozen ways. Would you like me to list them for you?”. Reginald Rose’s “12 Angry Men” presents the point of view that there is too much power in a democracy that isn’t being used fairly, showing how democracy is flawed questioning whether or not this really is an effective system. Unlike Reginald Rose, Langston Hughes believes that there isn’t enough power in a democracy and that everyone should be entitled to their own rights and should not have to wait for it to happen,showing the importance of attaining and fighting for democracy.
