In the book although there are many defense mechanisms, but the one people and the kids on the island use most is denial. Denial is such an easy thing to do, simply just tell yourself that it’s not true. Such a simple way to make yourself feel better. The first time when this idea become obvious is when Simon goes to his place on the mountain because he doesn’t want to deal with everything that was happening outside of his little bubble, that was his way of denying what was truly happening. Jack and Ralph also use this mechanism when the kid with the mulberring mark goes missing they knew that he was their responsibility, instead of looking for him they quietly denied he was missing.
