People who favor medicating the first signs of depression suggest that an instant solution is the most advantageous. However, the truth of the matter is that thousands of people a year are misdiagnosed with depression, this suggest that prescribing medication for depression should not be taken so lightly and is well advised to find an alternative treatment before attempting to find an immediate cure. A similar theme is seen in Brave New World when John is able to see how the state is controlling its people through heavy medication of soma. With an instant cure to their problems fit into a tiny pill, it is considered the perfect drug in this fictional world.

With a drug called soma. The drug is "Euphoric, narcotic, pleasantly hallucinant" (Huxley 218). It is described as a go-to in times of stress or unhappiness "Stability was practically assured" (huxley 218). It was common for everyone to take it, it was effective and helped them forget their problems. No one could find a problem with it, with the exception of a few people. John the savage was able to see how the empire was medicating everyone and how it keep society under their control. He was able to see how they believed it made them happier and solved their temporary problems. Similarly in the real world people think medicating any signs of depression to make them instantly cured or so they feel better is the best option. Some differences seen in Brave New World taking soma keeps them under control of a higher power. It keeps them ignorant and unquestioning of the systematic world around them. However antidepressants in this day and age are taken for attempts at self control, which may not be needed to begin with.

The future of antidepressants is slow, and here is why, pharmaceutical companies over the years have put less money and research into new ones. The reason is unknown other than it is simply not worth it compared to researching other drugs and advances in medicine. These big companies have to get their money's worth. This is a little confusing when more and more people are being put of antidepressant medication every year. The medication is by no means perfected, but so far it seems to work amongst the population and pharmacy corporations are ok with where it is at right
