Despair is a darkness felt inside. Despair is a storm cloud above only one person. Despair is feeling lost and alone in the world. When someone experiences despair, it’s like being stuck in quicksand, no matter what they do, they cannot break free, and they slowly get deeper and deeper into a feeling of loneliness. Despair is also being quiet for no reason, even when feeling happy. People who have this feeling of despair can easily feel depressed as well. Someone who is depressed will stop eating and have no desire to keep up with personal hygiene. Depression feels like a 100lb bag of sand sitting on the chest, depression seems hopeless to stop, even when surrounded by loved ones. They derive from the disruption of basic needs such as survival and attachment. One form of hopelessness is felt among people who are underprivileged and is called Uninspired. People who feel this type of hopelessness think that they do not have the right resources to be able to make it in the world. Another type is helplessness, which comes after facing a serious mental and/or physical torture such as sexual abuse. Forsakenness, powerlessness, oppression, captivity, limitedness, and alienation are also forms of hopelessness. In most cases, these forms of hopelessness are brief and will pass. However, in some cases, exstensive counseling is required to treat people who suffer from feelings of hopelessness or despair. The feeling of helplessness is one form that, in most cases, requires therapy. The thought that the abuser is still out in the world, able to prey on innocent women or men, makes the victim feel so helpless and scared that they are unable to pick themselves up and move on to a brighter future.
