It is important for staff especially teachers and teaching assistants to build effective and positive relationships with children, young people and adults in order for the school to complete its missions and aims successfully.
Children, young adults and adults are approached differently in terms of relationship building; you have to treat each group according to their age, maturity/development stage and professionalism. There are a number of factors involved to maintain positive relationships such as effective communication, respect, listening to others opinions and views and saying something simple such as please and thank you. It is important to respect the views of others including cultural and also trust others also. Information shared between adults should be remain confidential unless it involves the child’s safety otherwise trust would be removed and relationships between adults would weaken and that information may not be shared accurately. Relationship building with adults is more involved than with children and young people as it is built on trust, respect and mutual understanding. Adult relationships are harder to build than children and young people as they need more time to know they can trust you therefore it is important to ‘break the ice’ through good humour and friendliness. To build a relationship it is important to show an interest in the other person by asking questions and listening to the answers. In order to mutually understand each other it is important to share your experiences and opinions and feel comfortable being in each other’s company for better communication. Other ways to build a positive relationship could be through shared interests and find what you have in common with each other. It is important to have an effective communication between each to avoid any conflict and misunderstandings and be willing to apologise during any
