I took a shaky breath, the cold wind whispering and howling into my ears. I was standing atop the Washington Monument; a rope tied to my waist and around the very top of the tall, marble pencil. From here, I could view nearly all of Washington DC, every light, car, and monument.

I looked up, the dark blue sky filling my vision. The sky looked dusty, somber, even. It was like a blanket, falling over the city. Instead of this blanket warming the city, it only cast a dark light over it, drowning out the moon. It cooled the city, trapping the wind and moist air inside it. Not a single cloud covered the blanket, as if they had all been propelled outwards. The mellow, livid sky was calming, like a blanket, but unlike a blanket, it didn’t trap
